How Can I Tell If My Car Has Been Ceramic Coated?

How to Tell If Your Car Has Ceramic Coating | DC Chennai

If you've bought a used car, or you're not sure whether the dealership applied a coating at delivery, here are the most reliable ways to check whether your car already has ceramic coating — and what to do if it doesn't.

The Water Bead Test

This is the fastest and most reliable indicator. Take a bottle of water and pour a small amount slowly over a horizontal panel — the bonnet or roof works best.

If ceramic coating is present: Water will bead up tightly into near-perfect spheres and sheet off the surface quickly, carrying light dust with it.

If no coating is present: Water spreads out flat, clings to the surface, and evaporates slowly, leaving water spots.

A coating that is degrading or partially worn will show inconsistent beading — some areas sheet off cleanly, others hold water flat.

Check the Gloss Depth in Direct Sunlight

Ceramic coating adds a measurable depth to the paint's gloss. Stand beside the car in direct sunlight or under a bright artificial light and look along the panel surface at a low angle.

Coated paint will show a deep, wet-look gloss with clear, sharp reflections and strong colour saturation.

Uncoated paint that has seen Chennai sun for even a year will typically show surface haze, reduced depth, and slightly washed-out colour — particularly on darker shades.

This test takes some experience to read reliably — if you're unsure, DC can do a proper inspection.

The Hydrophobic Surface Feel

Run a clean, dry hand over a freshly washed and dried panel. Coated surfaces feel noticeably slicker and smoother than uncoated paint — almost frictionless. Uncoated paint has more surface drag.

This is more useful as a confirming check than a standalone test, but combined with the water bead result it gives a clear picture.

Minor Scratch and Swirl Resistance

Ceramic coating adds hardness to the surface (rated 9H on the pencil hardness scale). This doesn't make the paint scratch-proof, but it does make fine swirls less likely to form during normal washing.

If the car's paint shows heavy swirl marks under raking light, it either has no coating, or the coating has worn through, or paint correction was never done before application (which means the coating locked in the swirls permanently).

What the Paperwork Says — and Why It May Not Tell the Full Story

Dealers sometimes apply a "showroom polish" or a basic sealant and describe it loosely as a coating. This is not the same as a professional ceramic coating. If the delivery paperwork mentions a product name you don't recognise, ask DC to verify — Artdeshine products have specific product codes that a professional can identify.

A proper ceramic coating applied at a professional studio will have: a specified product (e.g. Artdeshine Ayicon Pro, Gyeon Quartz, IGL Coatings), a documented application date, and a warranty or guarantee card.

If you have none of this documentation, assume no coating was applied.

DC's Professional Paint Inspection

If you're still unsure, bring the car to DC in Maduravoyal. DC checks paint condition under a paint depth gauge and inspection light — this confirms whether a coating layer is present, how it is holding up, and whether paint correction is needed before a fresh application.

The inspection takes 15–20 minutes and is done at the studio.

If Your Car Doesn't Have Coating — When Is the Right Time to Apply It?

The best time to apply ceramic coating is as early as possible in the car's life — ideally within the first 3 months of ownership, before UV damage, water spot etching, and swirl marks accumulate. The cleaner the paint going in, the better the coating bonds and the longer it lasts.

For older cars, paint correction is done first to restore the surface before coating is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ceramic coating be applied over existing coating? If an old coating is still intact and in reasonable condition, a maintenance top-up can be applied over it. If it has degraded unevenly, the old coating is removed first by machine polishing before fresh application.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches completely? No. It increases surface hardness and reduces the likelihood of fine swirls from washing, but it will not prevent stone chips or deep scratches. For physical impact protection, PPF (Paint Protection Film) is the right solution — and PPF can be combined with ceramic coating for complete protection.

How long does ceramic coating last? Artdeshine graphene and ceramic coatings applied at DC are rated for 5–7 years with correct maintenance using pH-neutral wash products.

Can I apply ceramic coating myself? Consumer-grade DIY products are available, but they are significantly less durable than professional-grade coatings and cannot be applied correctly without a controlled, dust-free environment and paint correction equipment. Professional application at DC ensures correct surface prep, even coverage, and a warranty.
