You've invested in ceramic coating — now you need to wash your car the right way to keep it performing for years. Ceramic coating makes maintenance easier, but it doesn't mean "no maintenance." Using the wrong products or techniques can degrade the coating and undo your investment. Here's exactly how to clean a ceramic-coated car properly.
Rinse the entire car with a gentle stream of water (or a pressure washer at a safe distance — 30cm+ from the surface). This removes loose dirt, dust, and debris before you touch the paint. Skipping this step means dragging particles across the coating, causing micro-scratches.
If you have a foam cannon or foam gun, apply a thick layer of pH-neutral foam over the car. Let it sit for 3–5 minutes. The foam loosens and lifts bonded dirt so it rinses away without contact. This step is especially valuable in Chennai, where road dust and pollution stick to surfaces quickly.
Fill two buckets — one with pH-neutral shampoo solution, one with clean rinse water. Dip your microfibre wash mitt in the soapy bucket, wash one panel at a time (roof first, then upper panels, then lower panels), and rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket before dipping back into the soapy bucket. This prevents dirt from being reapplied to the paint.
Rinse the entire car thoroughly with clean water. On a ceramic-coated car, you'll see the water beading and sheeting off — this is the hydrophobic property at work.
Dry immediately using a clean, soft microfibre drying towel or an air blower. Do not let the car air-dry — even on a ceramic-coated car, minerals in water can leave spots if the water evaporates on the surface. This is especially important in Chennai, where water is mineral-heavy (hard water).
Use a separate mitt and separate bucket for wheels — brake dust and road grime on wheels will contaminate your paint-washing equipment. Use a pH-neutral wheel cleaner, not an acid-based one (acid can damage coated wheels).
Ceramic coating reduces how often you need to wash (dirt doesn't bond as aggressively), but the car still gets dirty — just less quickly and less stubbornly than an uncoated car.
Ceramic coating provides excellent chemical resistance, but bird droppings and tree sap are highly acidic and should still be removed within 24–48 hours. On an uncoated car, bird droppings can etch permanent marks in 2–4 hours under Chennai's sun. On a coated car, you have significantly more time — but don't leave them for days.
How to remove: Soak a microfibre towel in warm water, place it over the dropping for 30 seconds to soften it, then gently wipe away. Never scrape dried droppings — you'll scratch the coating surface.
Every 12–18 months, a professional maintenance service extends the coating's performance and lifespan:
DC offers this as a maintenance service for all ceramic-coated vehicles — whether we applied the original coating or not.
A touchless (water-only) automatic wash is acceptable in a pinch, but the chemicals used are often harsh. Never use a brush-type automatic wash. Hand washing with the two-bucket method is always the safest option.
Wait at least 7 days after application for the coating to fully cure. During this period, avoid water, rain, and bird droppings on the surface. After 7 days, wash normally using the methods described above.
Not necessarily. Reduced beading usually means the surface has accumulated a layer of contaminants (road film, mineral deposits, pollution). A proper decontamination wash or a ceramic booster spray typically restores the beading. If it doesn't, the coating may need a professional top-up.
No. Traditional wax is unnecessary and can actually interfere with the coating's properties. If you want to boost the hydrophobic effect, use a SiO2-based ceramic booster spray instead — it's designed to work with ceramic coatings.
DC is an authorised Artdeshine installer in Chennai. We apply professional ceramic coating and offer annual maintenance top-ups to keep your car's protection performing at its best.
