Chennai's Guide to Car Painting, Scratch & Dent Repair | Best Car Painti...

Scratches, dents, and paint chips are unavoidable in Chennai's traffic. Whether it's a parking lot ding, a road debris chip on the highway, or a scrape from an autorickshaw, knowing your repair options — and their costs — helps you make the right decision. Here's a complete guide to car painting, scratch repair, and dent repair in Chennai.

Types of Car Paint Damage and How to Fix Each

1. Surface Scratches (Clear Coat Only)

What it looks like: Fine white lines visible in sunlight. You can see them but can't feel them with your fingernail.

What happened: Usually from incorrect washing, automated car washes, brushing against the car, or light contact with bags/clothing.

Fix: Machine polishing (paint correction). No repainting needed. A professional polisher removes a microscopic layer of clear coat, levelling out the scratch. This is the most cost-effective fix.

Cost: Rs.3,000–Rs.8,000 for the affected area; Rs.8,000–Rs.15,000 for a full-car paint correction.

2. Deep Scratches (Through to Base Coat or Primer)

What it looks like: A visible line where you can see a different colour underneath (primer is usually grey or white). You can feel it with your fingernail.

What happened: Keys, sharp objects, another vehicle's edge, or road debris contact.

Fix: The panel needs sanding, priming, and repainting. Touch-up paint pens work only for very small chips — for any scratch longer than a couple of centimetres, professional panel painting gives a proper result.

Cost: Rs.5,000–Rs.12,000 per panel depending on vehicle size and paint type.

3. Paint Chips

What it looks like: Small spots where paint has flaked off, exposing the primer or bare metal. Common on the bonnet, bumper, and behind the wheel arches.

What happened: Highway stone chips, gravel, or debris kicked up by the vehicle ahead.

Fix: Small chips can be touched up. Larger or numerous chips require panel repainting. If bare metal is exposed, fix it promptly — exposed metal rusts quickly in Chennai's humid, salty air.

Cost: Touch-up: Rs.1,000–Rs.3,000. Panel repaint: Rs.5,000–Rs.12,000.

Prevention: Paint Protection Film (PPF) on the bonnet and bumper absorbs stone chips completely, keeping the paint untouched underneath.

4. Dents Without Paint Damage

What it looks like: A depression or crease in the panel, but the paint surface is intact — no cracking, chipping, or scratching.

What happened: Parking lot door dings, minor bumps, hail (rare in Chennai), or something falling on the car.

Fix: Paintless Dent Repair (PDR). A technician uses specialised tools to push or pull the metal back into shape from behind the panel, without disturbing the paint at all. PDR is faster, cheaper, and preserves the original factory paint — which is important for resale value.

Cost: Rs.1,500–Rs.5,000 per dent depending on size and location.

When PDR doesn't work: If the dent has sharp creases, the paint is cracked, or the location is inaccessible from behind (some structural panels), traditional dent repair + repainting is needed.

5. Dents With Paint Damage

What it looks like: A dent with cracked, chipped, or scraped paint.

Fix: Two-step repair — dent repair first (body filler and shaping if PDR isn't possible), followed by priming and panel repainting.

Cost: Rs.5,000–Rs.15,000+ per panel depending on severity.

6. Rust Damage

What it looks like: Orange or brown spots, bubbling paint, or flaking metal — usually around chips, scratches, and panel edges.

What happened: Exposed metal + Chennai's humidity and salt air. Rust spreads under the paint if not treated.

Fix: Sand down to clean metal, treat with rust converter, apply filler if needed, prime, and repaint. The longer you wait, the more extensive (and expensive) the repair.

Cost: Rs.3,000–Rs.10,000+ per area depending on how far the rust has spread.

How to Choose a Car Painting Workshop in Chennai

The quality difference between workshops is significant. Here's what to look for:

Feature Professional Studio Roadside Workshop
Paint booth Enclosed, dust-filtered spray booth Open-air or partially covered area
Colour matching Computerised spectrophotometer — exact factory code match Mixed by eye — close but often visible difference
Paint quality OEM-grade base coat + 2K clear coat Generic paint, thin single-layer clear coat
Surface prep Proper sanding, priming, tack cloth Minimal preparation
Finish quality Smooth, even, matches factory orange peel May show runs, orange peel variation, or dust nibs
Warranty Typically 6–12 months Usually none
Turnaround 1–3 days per panel Same day (often at the cost of quality)

Tip: For metallic and pearl colours, always choose a shop with computerised colour matching. These colours are nearly impossible to match by eye, and a visible paint mismatch reduces your car's resale value.

How to Prevent Future Paint Damage

After repairing scratches, dents, or doing a repaint, protect the investment:

  • Paint Protection Film (PPF): Apply on high-impact areas (bonnet, bumpers, fenders, door edges) to absorb future stone chips and scratches. The film self-heals minor scratches with heat.
  • Ceramic Coating: Protects the entire car against UV fade, water spots, bird droppings, and chemical damage. Makes maintenance easier and keeps the paint looking new for 5+ years.
  • Door edge guards: Inexpensive PPF strips on door edges prevent chips when opening doors in tight parking spaces.
  • Park smart: Choose end spots in parking lots. Avoid parking under trees (bird droppings and tree sap). Use covered parking whenever possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a car repaint take?

A single panel takes 1–2 days (including drying and curing). Multiple panels or a full body repaint takes 5–10 days. Rushing the process compromises quality — proper drying time between coats is essential for a durable finish.

Will insurance cover car painting after an accident?

Yes, if the damage is from an accident or covered event. File a claim with your insurer, get an assessment, and the insurance-approved workshop handles the repair. For cosmetic damage (no accident), insurance typically doesn't cover it.

Can scratches be removed without repainting?

Surface scratches that haven't gone through the clear coat — yes. Professional paint correction (machine polishing) removes swirl marks and light scratches without repainting. This is faster and cheaper than a repaint, and it preserves the original factory paint.

Is it worth repainting an old car or should I just sell it?

If the car is mechanically sound and you plan to keep it 2+ more years, a professional repaint can dramatically improve its appearance and your driving experience. If you're selling soon, even a single-stage paint correction (without repainting) can increase perceived value significantly.
